So theirs are careers with different profiles, but with a vast sphere of shared interests comprising philosophy, art, poetry and music itself. This provides the foundations for improvisation with a level of complicity that we can hear in this cD. it is an intersection of personal baggage that is a good example of what Galiana calls “positive improvisation”: a heuristictic-musical development that “refers to the divergent thinking that helps us give solutions to situations we are not accustomed to,” considering free improvisation to be “like a creative
process, not a finished product”.
Nevertheless, in FiRST TIMES we can find a finished type: the result of the improvisation session recorded by De solaun and Galiana on 20 June 2021 in the Teatre auditori venue in catarroja. That was a session of nearly two hours that produced twenty-three original improvisations,
fourteen of which are presented on this cD, changing their order in some cases, fragmenting others and seeking a discourse
that distils a composition in itself. It is full of echoes that compress its overall form to provide a proposal that faithfully reflects what an improvised concert is, with one hour of demanding listening that thinks, becoming a game of exploration of oneself and the other, in an unknowing knowing, with all tradition transcending, to freely paraphrase the verses of Saint John of the Cross.
The very dynamics of free improvisation also demand that we transcend our usual relationship with the titles of the fourteen pieces gathered here, since they were given a posteriori by Galiana and De Solaun as poetic strokes. Thus, the titles do not make up a basis for a programme that has informed the improvisation. On the contrary: it is the primeval, original music that has provided the inspiration for the words. This is something we have to take into account so as not to contaminate our listening with titles coined as a poetic process to open up horizons and offer up interdisciplinary dialogues.
