Interaccions sonores is an extended work of 55 minutes, for Barytone/ Soprano Saxophone and pre-recorded sounds with electronic elaboration. It is the fruit of an intense collaboration between the two Spanish musicians Josep Lluís Galiana (saxophonist, improviser and writer) and Joan Gómez Alemany (composer). This studio recording presents the final stage of a complex process of work and collaboration, where composition and improvisation complement each other and create a particular point of convergence. The originality and the richness of relationships that are created within it, depend on the work process that made it possible.
A first original solo Saxophone material has been recorded in studio by Galiana, under the supervision of the composer. Gómez Alemany has developed and elaborated the original Saxophone materials with different electronic treatments, connecting it also with previous materials of his own. This first stage of the work process defines, fixes and provides a completely new material with different degrees of recognizability of the original one. A written score based on this new material outlines and orders the coordinated roles of the electronic and the live performance, offering a balanced, oriented and still open “map” of the final work. According to the prescription and the path provided by the composer, in the live performance the Saxophone soloist interacts with another “himself” incapsulated in the recorded material, at different degrees of flexibility. Like in a deformed mirror or in a game of transformed “doubles”, finally it is anymore clear who is the source. This marks a difference from many common solo and live-electronic treatments: here the original improvised sound becomes a defined text, elaborated and re-created by another musician, setting clear limits which orient the further possible interaction of the improviser.
We may say, on one side the improvisation acts on itself, it is a constant and aware progress on itself, and this process becomes in a sense a compositional approach. On the other side the composer, who sets the basis, the path and the formal limits of the process of interaction between improvisation and defined sound material, opens its work to an unpredictable result, introducing himself, this way, in the flexible reality of the improvisation.
